Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The Sandwich Project is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 39-4022500). Cash gifts, checks, and most online donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For non-cash gifts, donors are generally responsible for valuing items unless the IRS requires a qualified appraisal. We’ll send an acknowledgment letter/receipt for every gift showing the date and amount; that letter is your official proof for tax purposes. If you need a specific gift acknowledgment (e.g., to a family or business), email s.washington@sandwichproject.org and we’ll get it right.

  • Donations are put to work quickly and transparently to fund meals, dignity kits (socks, hats, gloves), warming stations, clothing supplies, and the logistics that make it happen (insulated carriers, storage, permits, and training). We prioritize program impact while keeping overhead lean — funds cover direct services first, with a portion for essential operations and compliance. Want exact line-item reporting? Request our latest impact summary and budget and we’ll send the numbers and outcomes.

  • Absolutely. We run short, accessible shifts (1–3 hours) for packing, kitchen prep, distribution, and clothing sorting. No experience required — we provide a 15-minute training on food safety and trauma-informed engagement. To sign up, email volunteer@thesandwichproject.org or text/call Stacie at 313-370-2241 and we’ll place you on the next schedule. We also welcome corporate volunteer days, in-kind drives, and skilled pro-bono help (grant writing, logistics, social media).

  • Yes — but please check first. We gratefully accept new items (thermal socks, gloves, beanies, hand warmers) and gently used coats/blankets that can be cleaned and inspected. We cannot accept wet, heavily soiled, or damaged clothing. For large donations, schedule a drop-off or pickup so we can log, inspect, and store items properly. Email donations@thesandwichproject.org with a list and approximate quantity; we’ll reply with logistics and a tax acknowledgment.

  • Yes. You can make a tribute donation online or by mail and indicate the honoree’s name and whether you’d like us to notify a family member. We’ll send a personalized acknowledgment to the honoree or their family (amount not disclosed unless you request it). For larger tribute campaigns (memorial pages, recurring gifts in someone’s name), contact s.washington@sandwichproject.org and we’ll help set it up and provide suggested copy and acknowledgments
